February 21, 2012Mardi Gras is a french word that means Fat Tuesday. It refers to a celebration that is practiced on the eve of Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lent
season.
It is an ancient custom from France. As part of the Mardi Gras celebration, an ox was paraded across the town to remind people that it was the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the fasting of the Lent season, which begins on Ash Wednesday.
It is sometimes referred to as Shrove Tuesday
Today, people celebrate Mardi Gras with parades of beautiful floats, participants with beads and colorful costumes.

Mardi Gras Floats
Mardi Gras Shoe Box Floats
Supplies:
A shoe box or a tissus box
Tissue paper of all colors
Glitter Glue
Colorful Feathers
Mini pompoms of various colors
Directions:
Have the children decorate their floats
Ask them to choose a little toy person such as lego people and to sit them in the floats
Line them all up and watch the parade of floats!

Supplies:
Paper plate
Glitter Glue
Feathers of all colors
Straws
Directions:
Cut out two large circles to make the eyes
Let the children decorate their masks with glitter glue and feathers
Tape a straw on each side of the plate. This will be the handles for the children to use to hold their masks.
